Yoga does the body a lot of good. Fact. This age-old practice has gained massive popularity in recent years for the many health benefits it offers. From a healthy body to a happy mind, yoga is known to enrich the practitioner with better physical and mental states.
Having said that, did you know that there is another stream of yoga that targets your facial muscles specifically? Yes, we’re talking about the underrated practice of face yoga.
What is face yoga?
Deriving its name from the calming benefits it has; face yoga is a series of facial exercises you can do to add toning benefits to your face. From slimming jawlines to skin tightening benefits, face yoga can be your alternative for anti-ageing creams, botox, or even plastic surgery!
If it sounds too good to be true, think again. Much like any other physical exercise, facial yoga uses the same procedures for toning up the muscles in your face. Facial fitness has also been attributed to increased collagen production, improved blood circulation, and fine-tuned features.
Is face yoga actually effective?
Simply put, yes, face yoga is effective and can deliver on its claims. The trick is to always follow up with the routine every single day. The main cause of ageing in the face is caused due to bone and muscle loss. While you can’t stop bone loss permanently, you can always maintain muscle tone in your face by strengthening them with exercise.
Practitioners of facial yoga suggest doing it every single day if you want to see the results. Add it to your daily workout routine; with a little over 30-minutes required to do it, you can benefit from it greatly. Face yoga can also be a way of relaxing your overworked muscles at the end of the day.
We picked five unique face yoga exercises that you can do without breaking a sweat.
Warm-up your face
Much like a regular exercise routine, you have to begin your face yoga practice by warming up the facial muscles. Warming up your facial muscles will ensure that you do not have any soreness in your face later. Do anything that feels natural, as long as it shakes up those dormant muscles in your face.
Stick out your tongue and stretch out your temples to add flexibility to your face. Blow raspberries with your lips and or stick out your tongue to work up the muscles around your mouth. Do this at least once a day or whenever you are feeling stressed and need to release the tension from your face.
Tone up your double chin
Double chin ruining your fabulous selfies? Tone it up with this simple exercise! Loosen up your shoulders and keep them flat. Look directly above you by tipping your neck back till you feel a comfortable stretch in your upper neck and chin. Hold this pose while sticking out your tongue, for five seconds.
Alternate by coming back to the neutral position, looking straight in front of you. You should be feeling a mild burn but don’t stop, it means that the move is working. Repeat this in sets of five, twice every day. A word of caution though: don’t strain your neck too much doing this exercise. Make sure you are only tipping your head as far back as it feels natural.
Tighten your eye area
Tighten the skin around your eye area and get rid of fine lines with this quick manoeuvre. Hold out three fingers starting from the index and place it on your eyebrow. Cover both corners of your brow with your fingers and lift gently. Hold this lift for five seconds and relax. Do the same for your under-eye area but this time, press down your fingers slightly on the top of your cheekbone.
This exercise gets the blood flowing in your eye area while getting rid of tension. Do this before going to bed and we guarantee you’ll have the best beauty sleep for your life!
Smooth out smile lines
Ever heard the phrase “laughter is the best medicine”? Well, turns out, it is absolutely true! Smiling and laughing builds up your cheek muscles. But if you are noticing smile lines because of it, there is a way to deal with them.
Break down the tension around your mouth from the inside by blowing up your cheeks. Press on the side of your face with one hand to add pressure into the blown cheek. Cover your mouth while doing it so that you don’t blow raspberries in the middle of practising face yoga!
Repeat in five sets, relaxing your cheeks in between each set. Do it once a day for best results.
Firm up saggy cheeks
Want to swap your contour kit for naturally sculpted cheeks? Press down on your cheekbones in a cupping shape with your palms. Make your mouth into an ‘O’ and press your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Hold this pose until it is comfortable and repeat with 30 second relaxation time in between!
