According to legends, Sage Narada insisted that Rishi Veda Vyasa who has written many wonderful books should also write Mahabharata epic to help common man to understand subtle truths of the universe.
So, Rishi Veda Vyasa sought the help of Lord Ganesha to write down what he was saying.Lord Ganesha on his part said: “The moment you stop reciting I will stop writing forever.”
Rishi Veda Vyasa said: “Ok, I agreed to your terms, provided you fully understand the meaning of everything I am saying before you write.”
